In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Contemplate this ayat of the Qur’an:

“So enter the gates of Hell, to abide therein, and indeed, what an evil abode will be for the arrogant.” [16:29]

The tafseer of this verse extracted from Ibn Katheer is as follows:

(“Yes! Truly, Allah is Most Knowing of what you did. So enter the gates of Hell, to abide therein, and indeed, what an evil abode there is for the arrogant.”) (16:28-29), meaning, a miserable position in the abode of humiliation for those who were too arrogant to pay attention to the signs of Allah and follow His Messengers. They will enter Hell from the day they die with their souls, and their bodies will feel the heat and hot winds of their graves. When the Day of Resurrection comes, their souls will be reunited with their bodies, to abide forever in the fire of Hell, and (It will not be complete enough to kill them nor shall its torment be lightened for them.) (35:36) As Allah says, (The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and afternoon. And on the Day when the Hour will be established (it will be said to the angels): “Cause Fir’awn’s people to enter the severest torment!”) (40:46).

Also, take this related hadith into account –

Narrated Anas (radi Allahu ‘anhu):

The Prophet (sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said, “On the Day of Resurrection the Believers will assemble and say, ‘Let us ask somebody to intercede for us with our Lord.’ So they will go to Adam and say, ‘You are the father of all the people, and Allah created you with His Own Hands, and ordered the angels to prostrate to you, and taught you the names of all things; so please intercede for us with your Lord, so that He may relieve us from this place of ours.’ Adam will say, ‘I am not fit for this (i.e. intercession for you).’ Then Adam will remember his sin and feel ashamed thereof. He will say, ‘Go to Nuh, for he was the first Apostle, Allah sent to the inhabitants of the earth.’ They will go to him and Nuh will say, ‘I am not fit for this undertaking.’ He will remember his appeal to his Lord to do what he had no knowledge of, then he will feel ashamed thereof and will say, ‘Go to the Khalil-ur-Rahman1 (i.e. Ibraham).’ They will go to him and he will say, ‘I am not fit for this undertaking. Go to Musa, the slave to whom Allah spoke (directly) and gave him the Taurat (Torah).’ So they will go to him and he will say, ‘I am not fit for this undertaking.’ and he will mention (his) killing a person who was not a killer, and so he will feel ashamed thereof before his Lord, and he will say, ‘Go to ‘Isa, Allah’s Slave, His Apostle and Allah’s Word and a Spirit coming from Him.2 ‘Isa will say, ‘I am not fit for this undertaking, go to Muhammad (sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) the Slave of Allah whose past and future sins were forgiven by Allah.’ So they will come to me and I will proceed till I will ask my Lord’s Permission and I will be given permission. When I see my Lord, I will fall down in Prostration and He will let me remain in that state as long as He wishes and then I will be addressed.’ (Muhammad!) Raise your head. Ask, and your request will be granted; say, and your saying will be listened to; intercede, and your intercession will be accepted.’ I will raise my head and praise Allah with a saying (i.e. invocation) He will teach me, and then I will intercede. He will fix a limit for me (to intercede for) whom I will admit into Paradise. Then I will come back again to Allah, and when I see my Lord, the same thing will happen to me. And then I will intercede and Allah will fix a limit for me to intercede whom I will let into Paradise, then I will come back for the third time; and then I will come back for the fourth time, and will say, ‘None remains in Hell but those whom the Qur’an has imprisoned (in Hell) and who have been destined to an eternal stay in Hell.’” (The compiler) Abu ‘Abdullah said: ‘But those whom the Qur’an has imprisoned in Hell,’ refers to the Statement of Allah:

“They will dwell therein forever.” [16:29]

(Sahih Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60, Number 3)

Do you want to be one of those mentioned who were heedless of the signs, whose hearts were hardened and they were blind, who were not interceded for by our beloved Prophet (sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam); who were imprisoned in hellfire by the Qur’an?

Let the Qur’an be for you instead of against you..

Imprison your Nafs, your sins and your shaytaan before you yourself are imprisoned..

May Allah save us all from this severe torment and make us of the Muttaqun. Ameen.

Footnotes:

[1] Meaning the intimate friend of the Most Gracious (Allah).

[2] This may wrongly be understood as the spirit or soul of Allah (as misinterpreted by the Christians), but in fact, it is a soul created by Allah, i.e. ‘Isa (‘alaihi salaam). It was His word: “Be!” – and he was (created like the creation of Adam).

Oh slaves of Allah — Oh Ummah of Muhammad (SallallAllahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam): The Qur’aan is your life! The Qur’aan is your flesh! The Qur’aan is your blood! The Quran is your nerves! The Qur’aan is your honor and prestige! The Qur’aan is your dunya (world)! The Qur’aan is your aakhira (afterlife)! The Glorious Qur’aan is the reason for your pride! The Glorious Qur’aan is the reason for your elevation! Oh slaves of Allah: if you put The Glorious Qur’aan behind you, you would be in a state of humiliation and poverty! …Because surely, it’s the rope of Allah!
“..And hold on to the rope of Allah, and do not separate… ” (Aali ‘Imraan: 102)

The rope of Allah is His religion, and His Qur’aan, as in the most apparent sayings of the interpreters of The Qur’aan!
Shame (on you) and how can the English language enter (upon you) so blatantly, as you have learned it from its people and those who have been born and bred upon its letters and its grammar!
Shame on you! …you learn a language or two languages from the languages of the obfuscates, and you don’t even put the effort into learning your own Arabic language, not even able to construct a single sentence so that someone who seeks to understand you can understand you, and so that the eloquent can understand your speech! Shame on you! …shame on you for turning your back upon the reason for your pride while holding onto the reason for your misguidance! Shame on you! …this can only be a testament to the laziness of the onlooker, and a testament to his narrow-sightedness. Shame on you! …in that you have the book of Allah in your house, between your hands, and (in most cases) even dust has overstepped it!

Shame on you! …in that you only return to The Book of Allah in times that travesty has befallen you; only when your arm is twisted behind your back!
Shame on you! …in that you only return to The Book of Allah when your become ill and incapacitated!
Shame on you! …in that you don’t reflect upon the blessing that Allah has bestowed upon you!
Shame on you! …in that you leave The Qur’aan so blatantly behind you as if you’re really mesmerized by it, and you don’t even look in it, in the day or in the night.
Shame on you! …in that your heart isn’t even effected by a short chapter from The Book of Allah!
Shame on you! …in that your tongue doesn’t pronounce the words of your Lord, (Jalla wa ‘Alaa)!
Oh Slaves of Allah: it’s obligatory upon us to obey Allah; and it’s obligatory upon us to use our intellects and to be mindful of our duties! It’s obligatory upon us to safeguard that which benefits us, for our enemy surely won’t safeguard it for us. …and if we don’t wake up to safeguarding our honor (our deen), then it’s not safe from our enemies! …and if we don’t protect our deen, ourselves, then indeed Allah will send upon us rain of destruction from the sky, and he will replace all of us, and dispel all of us, hidden and apparent!
“And if you turn away (from Islam and the obedience of Allah), He will exchange you for some other people, and they will not be your likes.” (Muhammad: 38)

How long will you remain lost!
How long will you remain isolated!
How long will you remain astray!
How long will you remain reclined!
How long will you remain lying down!

How long will this coma last, oh slaves of Allah! …and while the Glorious Qur’aan calls the adhaan of the hearts, day comes and night comes, and no one answers! And the Prophet (SallallAllahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam) complained about you to his Lord! When the Messenger (SallallAllahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam) said,
“Yaa Rubb (oh my Lord), my people have indeed abandoned this Qur’aan!” (Furqaan: 30)
Learn The Book of Allah, and don’t let a day pass without looking into The Glorious Qur’aan!

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Masud: The Prophet (sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) recited Surat an-Najm at Makkah and prostrated while reciting it and those who were with him did the same except an old man who took a handful of small stones or earth and lifted it to his forehead and said, “This is sufficient for me.” Later on, I saw him killed as a non-believer. [Volume 2, Book 19, Number 173]

Humility is a greatly valued characteristic of the Muslim. The description of how the humility of a true believer should be can be found in countless verses of the Holy Qur’an:

“And they fall upon their faces weeping, and the Qur’an increases them in humble submission.” [17:109]

“And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allah the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.” [22:54]

“And seek help in patience and As-Salat and truly it is extremely heavy and hard except for Al-Khashi’un [i.e. the true believers in Allah - those who obey Allah with full submission, fear much from His Punishment, and believe in His Promise (Paradise, etc.) and in His Warnings (Hell, etc.)].” [2:45]

“They who are during their prayer humbly submissive.” [23:2]

“And the slaves of the Most Beneficent (Allah) are those who walk on the earth in humility and sedateness, and when the foolish address them (with bad words) they say, ‘Peace.’” [25:63]

“Say (O Muhammad, sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam): “Who rescues you from the darkness of the land and the sea (dangers like storms), when you call upon Him in humility and in secret (saying): If He (Allah) only saves us from this (danger), we shall truly be grateful.” [6:63]

“If We had sent down this Qur’an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.” [59:21]

“Have they not considered what things Allah has created? Their shadows incline to the right and to the left, prostrating to Allah , while they are humble.” [16:48]

“Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret; indeed, He does not like transgressors.” [7:55]

“And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear without being apparent in speech – in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.” [7:205]

“Verily, Ibrahim (‘alaihi salaam) was, without a doubt, forbearing, used to invoke Allah with humility, and was repentant (to Allah all the time, again and again).” [11:75]

Time and time again, Allah has given us admonition so that we may pay heed:

“Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient.” [57:16]

“If We willed, We could send down to them from the sky a sign for which their necks would remain humbled.” [26:4]

“See they not what is before them and what is behind them, of the heaven and the earth? If We will, We shall sink the earth with them, or cause a piece of the heaven to fall upon them. Verily, in this is a sign for every faithful believer that [believes in the Oneness of Allah], and turns to Allah (in all affairs with humility and in repentance).” [34:9]

“And indeed We seized them with punishment, but they humbled not themselves to their Lord, nor did they invoke (Allah) with submission to Him.” [23:76]

“Until, when We grasp those of them who lead a luxurious life with punishment, behold! They make humble invocation with a loud voice.” [23:64]

“And We have already sent [messengers] to nations before you, [O Muhammad, sall Allahu 'alaihi wa sallam]; then We seized them with poverty and hardship that perhaps they might humble themselves [to Us].” [6:42]

“When Our Torment reached them, why then did they not believe with humility? But their hearts became hardened, and Shaytaan made fair-seeming to them that which they used to do.” [6:43]

“And We sent no Prophet unto any town (and they denied him), but We seized its people with suffering from extreme poverty (or loss in wealth) and loss of health and calamities, so that they might humble themselves (and repent to Allah).” [7:94]

Allah is in NO need of our submission and praises:

“Surely those who are with your Lord (angels) are not too proud to serve Him, and they declare His glory and prostrate in humility before Him.” [7:206]

“And to Allah prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of creatures, and the angels [as well], and they are not arrogant.” [16:49]

It is out of His inexhaustible bounty that He gives us these opportunities for our salvation. He is the Almighty, Most Powerful, Most Benevolent, Most Merciful and Self-Sufficient and is in no want or need of anything, let alone the praises and obedience of beings so flawed and ungrateful.

Look at how merciful our Lord is that He has chosen to give us free will and honor us by making us the best of creation. Yet, this free will in itself is also a test:

“Their eyes will be cast down, ignominy will cover them; they used to be called to prostrate (offer prayers), while they were healthy and good (in the life of the world, but they did not).” [68:43]

We have the CHOICE to save ourselves. Yet there are those who choose not to?

But if we fail to humble ourselves to the Almighty Allah, indeed we will meet with a punishment, awaiting us on the Day, much too severe in magnitude. That Day we will truly be humbled with disgrace:

“With their eyes lowered in fear and humility, ignominy covering them (all over)! That is the Day which they were promised!” [70:44]

“Then We shall save those who use to fear Allah and were dutiful to Him. And We shall leave the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers, etc.) therein (humbled) to their knees (in Hell).” [19:72]

“And (all) faces shall be humbled before (Allah), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. And he who carried (a burden of) wrongdoing (i.e. he who disbelieved in Allah, ascribed partners to Him, and did deeds of His disobedience), became indeed a complete failure (on that Day).” [20:111]

“And you will see them being exposed to the Fire, humbled from humiliation, looking from behind a covert glance. And those who had believed will say, ‘Indeed, the true losers are the ones who lost themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, the wrongdoers are in an enduring punishment.’” [42:45]

“And you will see each nation humbled to their knees, each nation will be called to its Record of deeds. This Day you shall be recompensed for what you used to do.” [45:28]

“They will come forth, their eyes humbled, from their graves as if they were locusts spread abroad.” [54:7]

“Verily, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad, sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) will be disgraced, as those before them (among the past nation), were disgraced. And We have certainly sent down verses of clear evidence. And for the disbelievers is a disgracing torment.” [58:5]

“Those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad, sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam), they will be among the lowest (most humiliated).” [58:20]

“Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming event? Some faces, that Day, will be humbled, Working hard and exhausted. They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire. They will be given drink from a boiling spring. For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant. Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.” [88:1-7]

So take heed and begin to realize before it is too late..

“However, he who turns away and disbelieves – Then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment. Indeed, to Us is their return. Then indeed, upon Us is their account.” [88:23-26]

Because the man in the hadith thought himself too good to humble himself before the Almighty and he met his dire end..

May Allah protect us all from the punishment of Hellfire. Ameen.

Imâm Al-Awzâ’î – Allâh have mercy on him – said:

Faith (îmân) is not sound except with [correct] words. Faith and words are not sound except with [good] works. And faith, words and deeds are not sound except with [the correct] intentions in conformance to the Sunnah. Those who went before us of our Salaf did not separate faith from deeds: deeds are a part of faith, and faith is from [ones deeds]. îmân is a word that brings together these aspects of the religions [of Allâh] and is confirmed through [a person's] works.

So whoever believes in word, knows in his heart and confirms [his belief] through his works, then this is the strongest handhold that will never break. And whoever says [words of faith] but does not know [faith] in his heart nor confirms it with his works, it will never be accepted of him and he will be in the hereafter from those who suffer in loss.

Reference: Ibn Ba tt ah, Al-Ibânah Al-Kubrâ article 1097.

Blogger’s Comment: For those who say, “I know I have Iman and blind faith in my heart and I don’t need to pray or do these things to prove it. Only Allah can judge me.” Firstly, Iman and actions go hand in hand, one is void of goodness without the other. Secondly, saying, “Only Allah can judge me.” should make you more afraid because, in the end, it is His judgement that matters, not ours. May Allah protect us from falling into error.

Zoom!
Before we knew it, last year passed by like a flash and the new year is here.

For some people, the beginning of the new year is marked by excited countdowns, popping of firecrackers, partying till the wee hours of the morning and dancing.
And for some, it is a time for somber thoughtfulness and self accountability.
Instead of celebrating, they are worried and scared.
Instead of partying, they think and reflect.
Their hearts tremble and their skins shiver.

Because each year that passes means a year LESS from their lifetime…..
Each year that passes by is bringing them closer to their death….
Because, they know that with each passing year….each passing month….each passing day…..and each passing second…they are that much closer to that inevitable event when they meet their end,
that much closer to their meeting with their Lord, when they will have to stand in front of Him and answer regarding all that they did.
They are aware that whatever time has passed will never come back.
They know that if they did not make the most of their time, and if they did not use their time wisely, in the obedience of Allaah, then surely, they are the losers.

That is because, the Prophet (sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam) said:

“On the Day of Resurrection the feet of the son of Adam (man) will not move till he is questioned about four things: how he spent his lifetime, how he spent his youth, from where he acquired his wealth and how he spent it, and what he did with his knowledge.” (Tirmidhi)

So they take account of themselves and their deeds at the end of a year….and at the end of a month…..and at the end of a day. They are not heedless of the passage of time or day. They are conscious of every second of their lives and how important it is to spend it usefully.

You see, your life is like the pages of a calendar. As the months go by, you flip its pages, never to flip the pages back. Those months that have passed will never come back.
Similarly, as the days and weeks and months of your life go by, they too, will never come back.
What is gone, is gone.
That is why the righteous Salaf were so careful about their time and how they spent it. They made sure that no time, however short it was, passed without doing something useful, like acquiring useful knowledge, doing good deeds, helping others, or advising the Ummah.

Describing the Salaf’s care for time, Hasan al-Basri said: “I saw those people and how they were more careful about their time than about their Dirhams and Dinars (meaning, their money).

Regarding Imaam Hammad ibn Salamah, someone said: “It is unbelievable! I have never seen Hammad laugh at all. He was always busy explaining hadeeth, praying, reading or praising the Lord. This is how he spent his day.” And:” If you were to tell Hammad, ‘You are going to die tomorrow’, there would be nothing he could add to what he is already doing.”

Subhaan Allaah! What consciousness of the value of time!

Ibn al-Qayyim says: “The year is like a tree, months are its branches, days are the branch sticks, hours are its leaves, and the breaths are its fruits. Therefore, if one’s breaths are in obedience [to Allah and His Messenger], the fruits of his tree are good. If they are in disobedience, his fruits are bitter. The harvest is on the Appointed Day, when one’s fruits are found out to be either good or bitter.”

The Prophet (sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam) said:
“Make the most of five things before five others: life before death, health before sickness, free time before becoming busy, youth before old age, and wealth before poverty.” (Saheeh al-Jaami’)

This Hadeeth, like so many other ahaadeeth of the Prophet (sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa sallam), is brief, yet it is so comprehensive and loaded with meaning. Not only does it point out the value of time, but it also points out the importance of its proper utilization during our youth, and health. It urges us to take the initiative, and not to delay good deeds.

And Imam Ahmad advised: Whatever good you are able to do then do it- perhaps you will not be able to tomorrow. And do not postpone today’s deeds for tomorrow, perhaps tomorrow will come and you are deceased.

Thus, we see that the Sahaabah were not only careful about not wasting their time; rather they would compete with one another in doing good deeds. The noble and commendable competitions that occurred between Aboo Bakr and Umar is well-known to all.
“Umar RA saw an opportunity to outstrip Aboo Bakr RA and he said: ‘Today, I am going to surpass Aboo Bakr.’ He said: ‘So I came with half of my property. The Messenger of Allaah asked: ‘What have you left for your family?’ I answered: ‘As much as this.’ Then Aboo Bakr came with all that he has and the Messenger of Allaah said: ‘What have you left for your family?’ He replied: ‘I left for them Allaah and his Messenger.’ It is then that I said: ‘I shall never compete with him on anything again.” (At-Tirmidhee).

And Allaah says: “So race in goodness.” (Surah Baqarah: 148)

Some ‘Ulamaa while commenting on the above verse said: “Whoever beats others to the righteous deeds in this world will be the foremost on the Last Day and the foremost people are the highest in position.” Dear brothers and sisters, man’s life is not free from impediments, obstacles and calamities, which can prevent him from accomplishing what could have been done earlier. However, wise are those who grab available opportunities before being handicapped by obstacles.
Let us leave those people moving aimlessly in their fake pleasures and ponder over a better and sublime competition……. a competition that is encouraged by the Glorious Qur’aan.

It is a race towards the Pleasure of Allaah and Paradise….a competition in the field of righteous deeds.
It is a competition in which the participants are wise people who are aware that this life is short hence they compete with one another in investing their lives in acts of obedience to Allaah.
“Therefore, race for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Garden as wide as heaven and earth, prepared for those who believe in Allah and His Messengers. Such is the Favor of Allah; He gives it to whom He will. Allah is the Owner of great favor.” (Surah Hadeed: 21)

Exalt the name of your Lord, the Most High, [87:1]

Who created and proportioned [87:2]

And [then] makes it black stubble. [87:5]

We will make you recite, [O Muhammad], and you will not forget, [87:6]

Except what Allah should will. Indeed, He knows what is declared and what is hidden. [87:7]

He who fears [ Allah ] will be reminded. [87:10]

But the wretched one will avoid it – [87:11]

[He] who will [enter and] burn in the greatest Fire, [87:12]

The Final Sermon of the Prophet (sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam):

After praising, and thanking Allah, the Prophet Muhammad (sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said:

“O People, lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore, listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and take these words to those who could not be present here today.

O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that He will indeed reckon your deeds. Allah has forbidden you to take usury (interest), therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived. Your capital, however, is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity. God has Judged that there shall be no interest, and that all the interest due to Abbas ibn Abd’al Muttalib shall henceforth be waived…

Beware of Shaytaan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under a trust from Allah and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste.

O People, listen to me in earnest, worship Allah, perform your five daily prayers, fast during the month of Ramadan, and offer Zakat. Perform Hajj if you have the means.

All mankind is from Adam (alaihis salaam) and Hawa. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab; white has no superiority over black, nor does a black have any superiority over white; [none have superiority over another] except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.

Remember, one day you will appear before Allah and answer for your deeds. So beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.

O People, no prophet or apostle will come after me, and no new faith will be born. Reason well, therefore, O people, and understand words which I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the Quran and my example, the Sunnah, and if you follow these you will never go astray.

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and it may be that the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness, O Allah, that I have conveyed your message to your people.”

Thus the beloved Prophet (sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) completed his Final Sermon, and upon it, near the summit of Arafat, the revelation came down:

“…This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My Grace upon you, and have chosen Islam for you as your religion…” (Quran 5:3)

Even today the Last Sermon of Prophet Muhammad (sall Allahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) is passed to every Muslim in every corner of the word through all possible means of communication. Muslims are reminded about it in mosques and in lectures. Indeed the meanings found in this sermon are indeed astounding, touching upon some of the most important rights Allah has over humanity, and humanity has over each other. Though the Prophet’s soul has left this world, his words are still living in our hearts.

In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful

An Infrequently Practiced Sunnah – Dua during Recitation
—————————————————————–

Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that,” Whenever the the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) read a verse about Allah’s punishment , he would seek refuge in Allah. And whenever He read a verse mentioning Allah’s mercy , he would ask Allah for His mercy. Hudhayfah said, “ Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed he would say, “ Subhana Rabbil Atheem.” and when He prostrated He’d say ,” Subhana Rabbil ‘Ala.”.

Collected by Ahmed 6/ 24 , Abu Dawud 873, and others. Graded as being Hasan by Al-Albani

Benefits for this topic:

Shaykh Abdul Azeez bin Baz (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

It’s Sunnah for every muslim who reads the Quran during prayer or elsewhere to ask Allah for His bounty at the verses of mercy. And when the Muslim reads a verse mentioning Allah’s punishment, he seeks refuge from the Hell-fire. Furthermore when a Muslim reads an ayah that deems Allah above something he declares it. He declares it by saying, “ Subhanahu wa Ta’ala.”

It’s recommended for every Muslim who reads : Is not Allah the Best of judges? [At-tin 8] to say ,” Indeed! : I believe that to be true.” Moreover when he reads, “ Is not He (Allah Who does that), Able to give life to the dead? (Yes! He is Able to do all things).[ Al-Qiyamah 40], he says, “ Indeed!: I bear witness to this.” The servant should say, “ I believe in Allah.” when he reads ,” Then in what statement after this (the Qur’an) will they believe? [ Al-Mursaalat 50].

After the slave recites the verse, “ Then which of the Blessings of your Lord will you both (jinns and men) deny? [ Ar-Rahman 13] He says, “ We don’t deny any verses from our Lord. And after reading ,” Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High,”[Al-A’la 1], he says,” Subhana Rabbil ‘Ala”

All of these acts are recommended for the Imam, followers , and individual reciting the Quran. These words are dua, and dua is wanted from the Muslim. This resembles the saying, “ Ameen” after Fatihah: and Ameen should be said in prayer and elsewhere after Fatiha.[ Majmu’ Fataawa Bin Baz vol 26 page 62-63
